Thatcham Research is proud to announce the winners of the Employer, Apprentice, and Mentor of the Year Awards 2025, celebrating outstanding achievement in the automotive repair sector. The awards recognise the dedication and excellence of individuals and organisations in the repair industry.
The Apprentice of the Year Award, which emphasises the critical role of apprenticeships in addressing the skills deficit and preparing the next generation of automotive professionals, went to Andrew Walker from Solus, Bolton. Andrew has shown outstanding skill, dedication, and growth in his MET (Mechanical Electrical Trim) discipline. Andrew’s winning nomination highlighted that he is a “remarkable individual whose enthusiasm and positive attitude light up every room he enters,” and how “his ability to lead by example and his readiness to step up when needed showcase his potential as a future leader.”
The Mentor of the Year Award honours Danny Newton from Activate Accident Repair who has made significant contributions to the development and success of apprentices. According to his successful nomination, “Danny embodies the Thatcham Research ethos, blending it seamlessly with his extensive production skills and experience. He challenges his current apprentice with tasks that push boundaries and support the adoption of new technological methods. This approach not only enhances his apprentice’s technical abilities but also boosts his confidence.”
The Employer of the Year Award goes to Steer Automotive Group, an organisation that demonstrates exceptional commitment to employee well-being, development, and innovation, creating a supportive and engaging work environment to attract and retain top repair talent and nurture apprentices. Steer remains a prominent advocate for apprenticeship programmes and skills competitions. Through key figures such as academy development manager Jim Swann and head of academy Steve Hoe, Steer passionately represents the needs of its learners.
Dean Lander, Thatcham Research head of repair sector services, said: "Celebrating the achievements of our sector is essential as we navigate the complexities of modern vehicle repair. Apprentices and mentors are the backbone of our industry, with mentors passing on invaluable knowledge to the next generation.
